Energy efficiency on cranes

LED lighting for overhead travelling cranes

We offer you an advanced LED lighting solution for your ABUS overhead travelling cranes that is based on the latest technologies. Our LED spotlights are not only modular and energy-efficient, but also meet the highest standards in terms of performance and reliability. Depending on the span of the crane and the height of the crane track, a crane can be equipped with different numbers of LED spotlights with different outputs.

Features and benefits of LED lighting:
  • Modularity: Our LED floodlights are available in a wide range of power levels from 100W to 350W. This modularity enables us to tailor the lighting precisely to the requirements of your crane installations and hall conditions.
  • Energy efficiency: With an impressive energy efficiency rating of A+, our LED floodlights provide high light output with minimal power draw compared to conventional lighting solutions such as high pressure mercury vapour lamps, high pressure sodium lamps and halogen lamps.
  • Long service life: Our LEDs have a service life of over 50,000 hours and are designed for more than 100,000 switching cycles. This significantly reduces maintenance and downtime.
  • Robustness and reliability: the LED floodlights are designed for use in a wide temperature range from -30°C to +50°C and have an IP55 rating, which means they are protected against dust and water.
  • Instant brightness: LEDs provide full brightness immediately, with no warm-up time, which is particularly advantageous in applications with frequent on/off switching.
Why use LED lighting on cranes?

The main purpose of lighting on overhead travelling cranes is to compensate for the shadows cast by the cranes, as the cranes are located under the hall lighting. According to workplace guidelines, an average illuminance of 200 lux is recommended. We also offer customised lighting solutions for specific requirements such as circulation areas, packaging areas and laboratories.

Installation of LED lighting

Our LED lighting solutions are delivered fully assembled and wired, including the necessary switching elements and transformers. This ensures easy integration into your crane control system and quick commissioning. It can be switched on and off from the ground using a radio remote control or pendant control. We are happy to provide further information or answer specific questions about lighting for your overhead cranes. Contact us to find a customised solution that perfectly meets your requirements.

Load indicator system (LIS) for ABUS wire rope hoists

For precise control and monitoring of ABUS wire rope hoists, we offer the advanced load indicator system LIS. This system is specially designed to protect your ABUS crane installations from overload . As the central control unit for the crane's electrical system, both systems offer numerous safety and control functions in addition to protecting against hoist overloads. Naturally, an operating hours counter is also included as standard. The LIS system can be precisely adapted to your requirements to optimise the performance of your ABUS crane installations.

Features and benefits of the LIS system:
  • Overload protection: The LIS system fulfils all legal requirements for overload protection and reliably protects your hoists from static and dynamic
  • overloads. The overload protection is, of course, adjustable!
  • Operating hours counter: Both LIS variants are equipped as standard with an operating hours counter for easy monitoring of operating times.
  • Individual configuration: A particular highlight of the LIS system is the option to select various options:
    • Load population recorder to determine the remaining service life
    • Partial-load switch for flexible application options, including for static reasons!
    • Monitoring of total loads on up to 3 hoists
    • Monitoring of hoists in parallel operation
    • 2 individually adjustable overload cut-off points
    • Monitoring of frequency converters in hoist operation
    • Extensive service and diagnostic options for efficient maintenance and troubleshooting

We are happy to provide further information about our load indicator systems or to answer any specific questions you may have. Contact us to learn more about the advantages of the LIS system for your applications.

Energy recovery in hoist operation

At ABUS, we rely on advanced technologies to continuously improve the efficiency of our overhead cranes. A central element here is the energy recovery in hoist operation, which is standard in our ABUControl-controlled systems with frequency converter hoists as well as in cranes without ABUControl but with a GM3000-7000 series frequency converter hoist.

How the energy recovery system works:

The energy recovery system makes it possible to recover the braking energy generated when loads are lowered and feed it into the grid instead of converting it into heat. This not only helps to significantly reduce energy consumption, but also to reduce operating costs and improve the environmental balance.

Features and benefits of energy recovery:
  • Frequency converter with regenerative braking function: The frequency converter controls the hoist motor of the wire rope hoist. The energy required to lift the load is stored in the load as kinetic energy. When the load is lowered, and in particular during the braking process, the energy stored in the load is released again. This energy is fed as direct current to power feedback units.
  • Rectification and feed into the mains: The converted DC energy is synchronised to the mains by the power feedback unit and fed into the mains. This means that the energy generated can be used efficiently instead of being lost as heat – this regenerative energy can be used within the building, e.g. to operate machines or electrical systems.
  • Energy saving: The recovery and feed-in of braking energy significantly reduces the energy consumption of the wire rope hoist/crane.
  • Cost efficiency: Lower energy consumption results in lower operating costs over the service life of the crane.
  • Environmentally friendly: The use of energy recovery helps to reduce CO2 emissions and improve the environmental balance.
Benefits for the operator:

Energy recovery brings numerous advantages for crane operators and machine manufacturers:

  • No reactive power costs: By using a converter with a power feedback unit, the cos φ of the system is maintained at 1. Additional power factor correction is no longer necessary, which saves further operating costs.
  • Higher system efficiency: The overall efficiency of the crane increases because the power converter has hardly any losses.
  • Optimal utilisation within the crane system: In our innovative ABUControl crane control system, we use the recovered energy to supply the frequency converter for the trolley with voltage. This means that the energy remains available within the crane system.
A sustainable future for the crane company:

By integrating energy recovery-capable frequency converters, ABUS cranes contribute to a sustainable industry. Instead of converting energy into heat unused, it is used efficiently – for a more economical and environmentally friendly crane operation.
